Description

In 2025 Film3D as it will be known will be the latest form of film based media. Film3D technology records everyday things in digital format much like video cameras today but is viewed as a holographic 3D succession of images much like the famous scene in Star Wars. The technology will first be used by large cinema companies and as the technology progresses and costs become cheaper the technology will spread to the general public.

Development

The first simple lifelike holographic image is recorded using over 20 high definition cameras set at various angles around the object in order to capture a 360 degree view of the object. The feeds from all the cameras are then instantaneously sent to a dozen computers that process the data making it a single all around 3D view of the object that is digitally stored on a hard drive. The digital file is then played through a projector on to a glass like screen which refracts the light from the projector making the appearance of a holographic image. With the development of this new three dimensional holographic like technology cinemas will once again be crowded with viewers wanting to take part in society’s latest craze. The technology only being available in cinemas will attract the public into theatres rather than watching movies at home or online. It will give cinemas a much needed rush during a time where cinema attendance is at a low.

While capturing technologies have stayed the same, new developments in the technology that projects the hologram have advanced. Unlike the previous method where the image was projected onto a glass screen the hologram is projected into the air removing the constraints of needing a background to project the image onto. To view the recorded holographic image a floor mat like projector is used which sends out the previously recorded hologram in a vertical direction. The beams of light are refracted through tiny mirrors inside the projector creating a holographic image. With the advancement of the projection capabilities of the technology viewers are no longer limited to viewing holographic films solely in cinemas. Once made publicly available the screen-less projectors will change the way society views motion pictures. They will have a drastic impact on Television sets; televisions will not fully become obsolete but will drastically have a decline in usage. A technological change of this magnitude will have near similar effects the same way DVD had on VHS. This new technology will not only change the ways in which we are entertainment but also in the ways we are educated. “It could have some other applications. In training it’s useful to show people three-dimensional displays. Also it would be good to show things in 3-D for defense command and control and for surgery” (Lawrence, 2008).

Rationale

Much like in the early twentieth century where film was in its early stages consisting solely of black and white images and later advancing to incorporate color, Film3D began in the same general sense. It started with basic ideas being pieced together to slowly develop simple successions of holographic images later developing into more sophisticated technological innovations leading to lifelike holograms viewable from a simple looking projector. Just as in the past where we had low resolution photo cameras there started to become a greater need for more technologically advanced cameras not only for entertainment purposes but also for research and studies. The need for high definition digital cameras as they are known today came into play for the reason that users wanted a more realistic, sharper quality of image. This same methodology can be applied to Film3D, at first there were simple holographic images displayed on a glass screen. These images were fine, there was nothing wrong with them but as time progressed the users became as you can say bored with them so new innovations began to rise. This so called boredom from the previous version led to the development of further technological advancements until the final product with the most realistic, sharpest and crispest images were possible. The human nature of always wanting something newer, better than what we previously has not only led to the advancements in Film3D but many other technologies.

The developments I have stated are plausible to an extent. Since the introduction of the television in 1928 (Wikipedia), they have been and continue to be a tremendous part of society. Almost every home in the world has a television set mostly used for entertainment purposes. With the constant technological changes of televisions from cable to the most recent high definition it is quite predictable that not only looking at historical changes in television technology but also in the technological changes of computers and cameras that holographic projectors are a possibility in the future.

In creating my new technology I looked at other similar technologies such as the television and cameras. They all followed a similar process starting off with basic ideas and then technologically evolving into what they are today to satisfy the needs of the users. I also drew upon the current information of the simple experimental holographic test CNN carried out during the presidential election of 2008. The possibility of this technology is not too far off in the future, the way we perceive the technology being used may not in fact be the actual purpose intended for it, we can only wait and see.

For my Facebook profile I chose Samuel Finlay Breese Morse. Not having a broad knowledge of him I researched him on the internet. After gaining general knowledge about him I began to make a Facebook profile of him. I used a print screen shot of a Facebook profile and began to add relevant information on it using Photoshop. I started by using Google images for the profile picture and album photos. I then filled in the basic and personal information section of the profile using general facts from Wikipedia. I added shows, movies and books that he would most likely watch if he was alive in our time. I then added contacts to his friends list that he had during his time. I added wall posts from others stating congratulations on his achievements. I have used Photoshop many times before so the aspect of creating this profile using Photoshop was not very difficult for me.

With the improvement of technology over the eras, film has drastically changed. With its precedent as theatre in the pre-industrial era to simple film during the industrial revolution and gradually developing into complex color film in post industrial society.

Throughout history and the pre-industrial era we have come to know that people used hieroglyphics, paintings and plays to tell stories. Later in history during the renaissance and Shakespearian era, plays were used on a far larger scale to pass down stories.

People needed a means of communicating past events to one another but due to the fact that most people were illiterate at that time, the idea of passing down stories by using plays was of appropriate fashion As more and more stories were passed down using plays many of these stories became widespread throughout towns and a few of them started to become popular. It was soon realized that people enjoyed watching the re-enactments of these stories that actors and theatres started to spring out all over.

During this era people did not have much to do in terms of entertainment. Theatre acted as a main source of entertainment for society at the time, having a profound effect on the general public. Vast amounts of citizens would gather at the local theatre to watch the latest play. It would soon become a social trend to view and gossip about the performances. The plays varied in themes anywhere from politics to comedies, and for the most part were solely for entertainment purposes but a few of them brought on political reform to communities. Entrepreneurs began to realize that theatres and plays would make for a profitable venture and decided to charge entrance fees for the audience. The closer you wanted to be to the actors and stage the greater the fee for tickets was, creating sections of social class throughout the theatre. Members of the community now had a place of social gathering where they were able to meet with friends and family to enjoy themselves.

The industrial revolution was a time in which changes in agriculture, manufacturing and production took a turn for the best. New technologies began to emerge which would soon change aspects of everyday life. (The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, 2008). One of these newly developing technologies was film. A device called the zoetrope was created which allowed the production of artificially created images to be viewed in motion. It displayed a succession of still images that were moving at the correct speed to be seen as if they were moving in conjunction (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2008). Celluloid film was soon developed allowing everyday objects in motion to be captured in real time. Celluloid film is created from chemicals, compounds and dyes which form a mouldable substance. In order to develop this into film strips the celluloid was cut into thin layers and then coated in photosensitive gelatine (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2008). Celluloid film led to the creation of movie cameras. The movie camera took a series of images called frames and stored them on strips of celluloid film. This early form of celluloid film was unable to capture colors.

With the rise of the industrial revolution came the mass production of goods, new iron making techniques and other various machine based manufacturing. These new manufacturing techniques paved the way for the development of film. The newly introduced methods of production led to the large scale technological advancement of the way film was captured, stored and viewed.

With the industrial revolution more people moved to the cities to work in factories rather than in the countryside. “With the adoption of the factory system, settlements grew around the factories” (Montagna, n.d.). People began to make wages rather than bartering for goods with their farm harvests. With the increased amount of wages individuals could spend more money on activities. The introduction of film left the public in amazement, greatly impacting society. Even though they were the simplest everyday routines being viewed, the public was so astonished with this new technology. It soon became one of the most popular pastimes leaving everyone waiting in lines just to catch a glimpse. “At the movie high tide in the 1946, before television invaded us, 80 million people a week went to movies. It was the community habit” (Valenti, 2008, p. 1).

During the industrial revolution all motion pictures were in black and white. Early stages of color film had each individual frame hand painted. With the introduction of the production line simple dye coloring systems were introduced. The technology used a number of glass stencils which coincided with areas to be dyed using dye soaked rollers (Wikipedia, 2009). This dyeing process later became obsolete with the debut of multilayer film. Multilayered film filters colour from light through colour sensitive layers on the film strip which remain coloured when light passes through them. To introduce larger numbers of possible colours many layers were added to the film strip.

The industrial revolution led to the creation of fast paced lines of production which gave birth to industrial corporations. Many film developing/producing companies such as Kodak, Fujifilm and Technicolor began to rise. The competition between these firms to develop the latest film technologies led to the development of color film.

Going to see movies continued to still be the trend until the Second World War. It was after the Second World War with the introduction of the television that theatre attendance began to decline. Film technology was now widely spread and fairly low cost enabling companies to start producing for television. The introduction of film being applied to television had a profound effect on cinemas. “The rapid spread of home television sets in the 1950s was accompanied by a steady decline in movie going” (MSN Encarta, n.d.). This drastically affected society, individuals no longer had to leave their homes in order to view on screen entertainment. People now had an alternative when it came to their entertainment choices.

The need for being entertained as a society has been around since the beginning of mankind. The industrial revolution with its advancements in technology aided the possibility of capturing and recording our entertainment needs. The development of film which we still rely onto this day plays a large role in the media industry.

Wikis bring together vast amounts of information from an array of human sources. From our classroom task we experienced various benefits and limitations brought on by wiki’s. The benefits of wikis are that with all the different sources contributing to the gathering and presenting of the information, the information is less biased than if there was one sole contributor. We can also see what previous contributors have written and base our ideas around those to further our own. The limitations of wikis are that when bringing all the information together it is difficult to have it flow in a specific manner due to the various writing styles of individuals. Overall this experiment worked well, we had a large amount of individuals able to research, gather and bring together the needed information to complete our class wide wiki. There was difficulty in the area of summing together the final version of the gathered information. Rather than doing this assignment as a group, producing this myself would differ the ending result. My style would generally follow the same format where there would be subheadings for each different section, but my writing style would differ since each individual writes in a way they are accustomed to and feels appropriate for them. Writing this myself I would have most likely gone in to the same depth and content but that would all have to depend on my time constraint and how much I would be able to accomplish as an individual. A factor that I am the only individual researching and writing, the breadth would be less broad due to the fact that I can only research and contribute so much in the period of time given. Being able to be in the same room as others using the same system enabled us to communicate far more than if it was online and we didn’t have any contact with each other. This made researching and posting the information simple. In all this experience has taught me allot about crowd sourcing and using wiki’s and how we effect and are affected by them.

I recently came across this article and was astonished with what can be done with a simple mobile phone. Simple programs downloadable from the internet installed on a computer can enable users to perform various so called spy activities. Wire tapping like in many movies is now a thing of the past. Not only can users set up systems which notify them when certain phone numbers are dialed but they can pinpoint your whereabouts minute by minute using GPS and Google maps. If that wasn’t enough you can listen in on what the person is doing without them needing to be talking on their phone, simply using the phones microphone. All of these privacy intruding programs can practically run undetectable to the owner of the mobile phone. All this new technology with the simplistic ease of intruding into anyone’s cellphone which for the most of use is a key to our personal lives is quite disturbing. All of this brings a whole new meaning to communication technology. We as users may possibly be communicated our personal information to others without even knowing it. Is the future that friendly?

What would you do in your spare time if we did not have the technology to capture objects in motion? Film is the medium that allows us to do just that. Face it, without film, our lives would be transformed drastically. Boredom would sweep across the globe. Children would have nothing to occupy their Saturday mornings. The content of these Saturday morning cartoons and television in general differs greatly from what we viewed in the past.

Daily, I spend countless hours watching either movies, television programs or pointless videos on YouTube. As harmless as it seems, this long term exposure is having quite the effect on society. Television and film companies are increasing the amount of violence they put into their productions in order to try and generate higher ratings to boost revenues. For them, the single intent is to generate profit regardless of its effect of youth. As younger audiences watch more and more TV they are slowly becoming accustomed to the violence they are viewing. Children learn by example. The acts of violence they view on television may make them feel as though they have to resort to violence in order to control or solve a conflict. Resorting to violence becomes the right method since that is what they are accustomed to seeing adults use to solve disagreements on TV and movies. “Studies show that people who watch a lot of TV violence not only behave more aggressively, but are more prone to hold attitudes that favour violence and aggression as a way of solving conflicts.” (Cyber College, TV and Film Violence Reaches a New High in 2006).The violence portrayed on film renders viewers insensible to it after some time. This growing familiarization to violence causes programs containing it to become more popular, which leads to the vicious circle of media corporations outputting more violent programs and films as demand continues to rise.

Violence does not have many positive effects on any level, film is no exception. Continuous exposure to brutal murders and acts of violence has no positive outcomes except to increase ratings for the media corporation. “It’s well known that TV violence holds an attraction for most viewers and this attraction translates into ratings and profits.” (Cyber College, TV and Film Violence Reaches a New High in 2006). This exposure is negatively affecting today’s society. In my perspective this amplified exposure is fundamentally changing the emotional connection we have with violence. Viewers are so accustomed to violence on television that they unconsciously incorporate this aggression into their everyday life.

In order to reverse the negative effects violence is having, the question is not what we can do to get rid of it but what we can do suppress it. The fact is that violence is part of human nature and history; it has been and always will be used in some way or another. Personally, we have a few options in controlling the content of the programs adolescents watch. Parents can install V-chips which can block out programs that they feel are inappropriate to their children and television and film companies are required to issue ratings suggesting the suitable age for viewing and the nature of its content. It would appear that these attempts at control are of limited or no avail. Without placing extremely strict laws on violence in television in film, which is impossible if we wish to maintain our democracy, our only option is to leave the current regulations as is and hope that viewers will be able to censor what they watch themselves. Hopefully, motion picture and television violence will lose its appeal and begin to bore society, forcing film companies to find different means of boosting their ratings such as comedy centralized themes rather than previous violence. It is mainly up to the viewer to recognize that what looks appropriate on film is not often applicable to real life scenarios. The power of change is in the hands of the viewers.

Some negative implications of having communication media in our lives are that it defers from face to face socialization since we are always using a form of technology, are face to face social skills may reduce. Another negative implication is that we become so centered around the technology that we tend to do less of the activities that require little or no communication media technology.
