1. Tell me about the different ways that you used communication for 24 hours in your journal. Think about the different media that you used, and the purposes for which you used specific media. Were some media better suited to specific purposes? (For example, the media you chose to use for social interaction versus information gathering: Why did you make these choices?)
The different ways I used communication for 24 hours in my journal were msn messenger, my cell phone, television and Facebook, to socialize, relax and do homework. Some media’s were better suited for a specific purpose such as talking on the cell phone is much easier than communicating on msn, and how email is much less instant then msn or a phone call. The internet was great for both socializing and information gathering since you are able to do so much with it.
2. What was the most common communication medium that you used in 24 hours? Why do you think this medium was the most commonly used one?
The most common communication medium that I used in 24 hours was my cell phone. I think this communication medium was the most commonly used since regardless of where the person you were trying to communicate was you were able to reach them. Whereas if you were using msn messenger the person you want to communicate with has to be online and available.
3. What was the most common purpose for the communication media you used?
The most common purpose for the communication media I used was to socialize or do homework.
4. What do you think you learned most about the role of communication media in your everyday life by keeping this journal? Please explain your answer.
By keeping this journal I learned that communication media plays a large role in my everyday life. I almost use some form of communication media at every point in time during the day.
5. What was the most surprising thing that you learned from keeping this journal? Why is this surprising? Please explain.
The most surprising thing I learned from this journal is how much I depend on communication media everyday without knowing it. This is surprising since we are so accustomed to media in our lives that when we stop and think about it, we really see how much we use communication media on a daily basis.
6. What are some of the positive implications about having communication media in your life? Name 2 or 3 possible implications, and explain them.
Some positive implications of having communication media in our lives are that it’s effortless to gather information rather than going to a library which saves time. It allows us to socialize all around the world almost instantaneously where as in the past using mail it would take days to weeks to get a message across the world.
7. What are some of the negative implications about having communication media in your life? Name 2 or 3 possible implications, and explain them.
Some negative implications of having communication media in our lives are that it defers from face to face socialization since we are always using a form of technology, are face to face social skills may reduce. Another negative implication is that we become so centered around the technology that we tend to do less of the activities that require little or no communication media technology.
8. How do you think your life would be if you did not have access to communication media. Please talk about both the positive and the negative things that might happen.
If I did not have access to communication media I would be increasingly willing to do more face to face socializing but I would only be able to communicate with people that were close to me. I would also have no access to news information therefore making me unaware of events taking place around the world.
9. if you had to choose one communication media to take on a desert island, which one would you choose and why?
If I had to chose one communication media to take on a desert island it would be a satellite phone so I could keep in touch with others and get off the island whenever I choose.
